3352: a fairytale

A bit of happy, if you need that today.

Once upon a time there was a girl named E and a boy named D.

E was born in Texas, to an emotionally distant mother and an alcoholic father. Both of her parents were architects and her mother had studied engineering and architecture at Berkeley and that was something you really didn’t do as a woman back then. E had an older brother and two younger siblings, a brother and a sister. She grew up a musical genius and fell in love with theater. She became an actress, and she acted in Jesus Christ Superstar, and she didn’t know what she wanted to do with her life but after a couple of years she figured out that theater wasn’t it.

D was born in Missouri. He had an older brother and two younger siblings, a brother and a sister, and his youngest brother was very much younger than him and had Downs syndrome and this was hard on D’s parents. D was bullied a lot as a kid for being a nerd because smart was a thing you weren’t supposed to be in Missouri in the 60s.

E went to college at UT and studied English and History with a minor in Women’s Studies because she was a feminist which was a thing you weren’t supposed to be in Texas in the 70s. E graduated and went backpacking through Europe with her sister M and they stayed in a hostel in Austria that played The Sound of Music on repeat all day every day and they liked Austria much better than Germany. E liked France most of all, and she decided to stay in Paris and work as a nanny for six months and then she moved back to Texas.

D got married when he was 18. When he was 19 it was the last year of the draft for Vietnam and he just avoided being drafted. He graduated from college in Missouri and was so brilliant he got accepted to do a PhD in Physics at CalTech and at some point before then he got divorced.

E stayed in Texas for a while still not sure what she wanted to do with her life but she knew she loved scuba diving. She fell in love with a diving instructor twice her age and he broke her heart when he married a woman closer to his own age. He told her to go to Tortola in the British Virgin Islands and he gave her a magic rock and told her to give it to an old lover of his who lived there and she would give E a room to live in. E took the magic rock to Tortola and the old lover gave her a room and she started working as a diving instructor’s assistant.

D started rock climbing in California and mountain climbing and scuba diving. He graduated from CalTech and worked for NASA on a probe that went to Jupiter. At some point he got married and divorced again. He was very sad after his divorce so he went on vacation to dive in Tortola in the British Virgin Islands.

There he met E. She was a rebound but still they fell in love, and then E moved to California to be with him. And when E took D to meet her parents she told them, Be nice to him, he’s the one I’m gonna marry.

Then after much coaxing from E and much fear from D because he’d been divorced twice and that was really painful, they got married. Then they had a daughter named K. Three years later, they had a daughter named A.

D and E are still married and still happy and they love K and A very much and K and A love them back very much and DEKA is a happy family and actually, happy families are all happy in their own ways too.

And that’s a true story.
And if you type out DEKA on a keypad it’s 3352.
And that’s why I have 3352 tattooed on my shoulder.
And if you hadn’t already guessed, I’m A.
